Perseverance (by Katrina Palermo Silawan)

(written on 27 February)

Perseverance is the ability to bear difficulties calmly and without complaint. It means we have to work hard in order to achieve our dreams.

My parents always tell me that if I am not patient in the little things in life, success will not come my way. So, never expect things to happen. Struggle and make them happen!

In my case, I have persevered in many ways since I arrived here in Singapore last May. I gave up some of my T.V. time to spend hours studying hard and helping my mum in the household chores. Being in a new place takes a lot of adjustment. My life here is totally different. I made a lot of sacrifices. I have to make new friends and cope with the new educational system, adjust to the new culture and the English Language (my mum is helping me write this), etc. I know it's not easy but when you are determined to achieve your goal, things will work out right.

Perseverance is the virtue we have to cultivate in our hearts. Without it, no one's dream will come true.

Anak, I know that little by little you have adjusted your way of life here in Singapore. We apologise of bringing you here and the whole family in this new place that is so different from your home country. Being out of your comfort zone is too hard to move and take action as you normally do. You have found that education system here is so different compared to your school before, but I know you can cope with it. You have to persevere and study hard to make your dreams come true. Please don't forget that we are here always (your Papa and Mama) to support and care for you. Just be cool, have fun while studying and meet/make new friends. Besides what our dreams for you, your sister and brother is to have a happy life and to become a responsible citizens someday. So be happy always and keep up the good work! God bless you always!
